Who Should Treat Your Back Pain?

Back pain is not something to be ignored. It has to be given attention and in some cases be treated. But the question is, “Who should treat your back pain?”

Many people are confuse as to which type of doctor to consult for their back pain. Well, every person is different so as situations and conditions are. There are many types of specialists that can treat back pain and each of them has different skills and trainings.

When your back pain or back problem occurs the first time, it would be a good idea to consult with a physician, osteopathic physician or chiropractor. Those doctors will do the initial exam and may refer you to a spine specialist depending on your case.

If you are referred to a specialist, it could be one of the following:

Physiatrist – is a medical doctor who specializes in physical medicine, rehabilitation, and pain medicine. These spine specialists focus on the body’s musculoskeletal system, which includes bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves.

Surgeon – Spine surgeons are the one who have training and have board certification in either neurosurgery or orthopedic surgery. Not everybody  wants to undergo spine surgery but in some severe cases it is said to be the quickest and most reliable way to address the cause of your pain.

Anesthesiologist – They are commonly known as the one who administers and monitors anesthesia during surgery. However, they also specialize in pain management and some focus on spinal disorders.

Rheumatologist – is a board-certified internist or pediatrician who is qualified by additional training and experience in the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis and other diseases of the joints, muscles, and bones (and that includes your spine).

Physical Therapist – They are highly-educated, licensed health care professionals who can help patients reduce pain and improve or restore mobility.

Before consulting your doctor or a specialist, it would be a good idea to list down or describe what you really feel and the things you’ve tried to do as treatment. This way, the doctor or specialist would have a clearer view of your condition.
